Oribe Canales first stepped into the world of fashion and beauty in 1977 when he started beauty school in Buffalo, NY. A year later, the renowned hairstylist Garren hired Canales for his salon at the Plaza Hotel where he used to style hair for some of the popular celebrities.

In the 1990s, Oribe started working closely with Gianni Versace. They were seen together on shoots, runway shows, and ad campaigns, and this opened up new avenues for Oribe, as he became one of the very first hairdressers from America to have a prolific presence in Europe.
In 1995, Oribe launched his first product range, featuring a pomade tin with a retro-chic persona. The very year, Oribe opened a salon in Miami as well.
In the following years, he collaborated with some big names in the industry like Jennifer Lopez, and styled 36 covers consecutively for Elle US with Gilles Bensimon.
